Many small towns kicked out their minorities (racial, religious, etc) ages ago. The phrase "sundown towns" refers to towns that were/are openly hostile to minorities because an individual could end up dead if still in town after dark.
Maybe you could send your kids to a great school and sign them up for a few extracurricular activities in more mixed environments.
Some people judge large poor families that are struggling because they might struggle less with fewer kids.

I grew up in mixed environments in L.A. and moved to the Midwest as an adult, and I still find it traumatizing. I have never wanted to leave the USA so bad in my life for a break.
