That's traditional in a lot of Latin American countries. My mom wanted to do it for me but my dad (who is American) wouldn't let her.

It's such a sad attitude to have. It makes no sense at all to hate someone just because they grew up in a working class or impoverished area. I've been on the receiving end of some that even though my family has never poor. I just come from a very small, rural and lower middle class town whereas a lot of the other

I kind of like people who are straight forward and tell it like it is. It's a lot better than people who are nice to your face but talk shit about you behind your back.

One of my cousins did that once. She actually called a black person that to her face actually. My other cousin says that she knew that she didn't know what meant so she kind of just gasped playfully. I think my cousin learned not to say it again after that.

I think you're still not understanding. I'm saying we SHOULD NOT tolerate harmful behavior like FGM. But being xenophobic to the point that you can't stand seeing a person wearing a hijab is ridiculous.

I think her point is that her cousin has to deal with this kind of treatment every day, whereas she and her wife (who are white women) do not. If her cousin hadn't been in the car the cop probably wouldn't have bothered them.

I used to read Parents' magazine too!

I have been trying to explain this to my dad. He thinks men are much more likely than women to hurt children because "women have maternal instincts".

What the hell. Too bad there's no one old enough to remember what they were like as small children.

I literally just LOL'd at that.

Our bad reputation isn't really unwarranted but thankfully many of us are learning! I do my best to respect the local culture whenever I'm abroad. You have such a better experience that way because the locals won't hate you as much!

I use my French press for tea too! I made Thai tea with it earlier. So awesome and easy.

In fact, I don't think we even really disagree. My basic philosophy is that we should be tolerant of other cultures' practices as long as no one is being hurt. FGM is cutting part of a person's body off so that they can't experience sexual pleasure, which should make it obvious that it's wrong to anyone. We don't need

People used to call the HPV vaccine the "whore shot" when I was in high school.

I don't think you understand. I'm not for FGM and I don't think it should be allowed. I was responding to your comment that suggested that Americans haven't had to deal with the problems that come with immigration from non-Western countries.

One of the problems with the left is that they think racism ONLY exists in the South and often won't acknowledge that it is and always has been a problem in other areas.

I'm not sure if you know this, but we have actually had a lot of immigration over the course of our history. We've been a country comprised of people of different races/cultures since our creation. From my experience, it's usually Europeans who like to look down their noses at us due to our history of slavery,

My high school was a public school, but I get your drift. We were put with another school from Florida (we are from central Illinois) and holy shit were those kids and their chaperones rude. Like getting drunk in public there and being rude to our very nice tour director. Some people seriously should not be allowed to

I went to Europe on a class trip in high school and a few people were not allowed into the cathedrals because they were dressed inappropriately. I agree that rules concerning modesty for women can be problematic, but seriously people! Have some respect for what these people consider a holy place.

They just treat another culture's religion like a playground.
