Dude, I love the fact you had the courage to ask. Sometimes starting a discipline can be hard and people can get really obnoxious... or maybe we can consider ourselves not fitting to the task. I'll try to tackle some of the questions in hope it helps.

I think the main reason 1984 is passé, is because it does analize the power and over all prescence of power, but it does from a very rudimentary and operational level. Society has exploded on a very complex being. The principles of power and coersion may be the same, but it has taken so much more textures and tones.

I don't have kids, but i can think of a few uses for this...

i think its a marketing issue. its a modestly funny show with a couple a serious plotlines.
