Those car seat bases add a lot of unnecessary bulk. They work great in a van or SUV where there’s plenty of wasted space for such things, but in a coupe or regular sedan it requires the passenger to sit a bit far forward and upright.

I grew up in Oklahoma about the time they actually did away with the annual inspection. Could be an interesting case study if a huge boom of death traps are now on the roads, which I doubt are any more than normal.
