Hopper smokes a lot but that seems very on brand for an Indiana cop in the 80s. I've got no issues with the depiction. It's not like the kids are smoking (which, uh, kids were definitely smoking when I was a teen in the 90s).

People would rather do literally anything than talk to their children.

I don’t think smoking is as often meant to add to a character as to add to the setting. Smoking is a big part of the setting during certain eras and among certain groups of people.

Except for the fact that people DID smoke like chimneys in small town Indiana in the 80s. It's very common for people to start (or re-start) smoking when stressed.

I also think it has been reported, both here and elsewhere, repeatedly that she and her children have continued to refer to her as their dad. Just a weird, lazy mistake
