From that era of Star Trek (1987 - 2005), DS9 easily had the best premiere. It was a little darker and more mature than TNG, but also cerebral and optimistic in the best tradition of the franchise. It takes guts to build the climax of your high stakes series premiere around a character explaining the concept of time.
