I am guessing that cars are so fast now that you need the shorter distance before cars start becoming 300mph+ flying shrapnel.
This was mentioned in another post but basically they have shortened many of the drag distances for safety as the cars are becoming too fast. 1/4 mile top class drags have been 1000 feet for a while.
Can you imagine a car company doing something like that today? Circumventing a bad review by just... going to geographical places where that review would most likely to hold the least amount of weight?
