Really? I feel manuals are safer because you have to actually operate the car on many levels; with automatic, one gets complacent while driving and you’re not as alert as you should be as a driver.

I was always taught not to coast as doing so reduces your control over the vehicle.
You shouldnt wear the clutch anymore in gear unless you do an extra shift. Engine braking is somewhat free and in an emergency you may need to apply power.

I was penalized on my driving test for having the clutch depressed mid-corner for this very reason. (I was just trying to drive slower than I normally would - I would normally have kept it in 2nd for a corner like that).
Huh. I thought you were never supposed to let your car coast to a stop, and always keep it in gear, even if the clutch is disengaged the whole time. My dad told me it was so I could use the throttle at all times to get out of a sticky situation, if I needed to. This guy probably knows more on the subject than my dad…
