It’s a gender thing. The thought behind it is that people would defer to a king over a queen and since most royal marriages throughout history have involved people from other countries, preventing a foreign prince from becoming king is preventing him from taking over.

Diana would have been queen, Kate will be queen and under normal circumstances, so would Camilla, however there are rumors that the Queen believed that she went far enough by allowing her son to marry a divorced woman and there was an agreement that she will never be queen.
