I don’t know exactly what Nintendo is doing different from Sony here. Sony tried to give us console gaming on the go twice and just couldn’t stick the landing, but the Switch really does work. I’m most likely not rebuying Doom, but am looking forward to playing Wolfie on the Switch. Killing Nazis on my lunch break? On

This is great Gita. I keep eyeing Shephy on the eShop. You’ve convinced me. Gonner looks great too. It’s hard to know what to look at on the eShop sometimes; if you keep making these lists we’ll keep reading them!

All great points! I suppose a counter-counter-counter point would be that there’s a lot of talk along the lines of “if you want to have fun, play as a team/with your friends, etc.”. This kind of talk could scare away a lot of new players who might otherwise have a very successful solo “career” like you’ve had. Full

Follow-up: I’ve had some great experiences on a team, and some great experiences playing solo as well. Even if you normally play solo, I hope you’ll give team play a shot to see how it feels. [In rereading my post it seems like I’m making a hard case against team play, which was not my intention].

Good question. I would guess that it’s a combination of the columnist’s interest and what game is—for better or for worse—dominating the conversation at the time.

As others have said, the microtransactiosn in actuality aren’t a big deal. Last time I logged in, I had way more shaders that I could use, acquired over the course of regular play. I do, however, feel that the way the game is parcelled out is kind of crappy. For example, I feel that D2 is the follow-up to Taken King

Same here, and when you’re actively playing it seems like the free “level-up” bright engrams come along at a fairly good clip.

For people who are completely new to the game, there’s another thing to note based on these two quotes: “everything is better on a team” and “join a clan”.

I didn’t play Federation Force, but in all fairness, Metroid Prime Pinball was a blast. I played that a LOT.

Oh, didn’t know that! Yeah you’re probably right then. They’d be more likely to give a callback to a former partner. Always fun to find these little shoutouts.

Good point. I wonder which one Bungie intended? ME:A is newer, but Borderlands as a series probably reached a larger audience than ME:A.

Speaking of call-backs or call-outs, there’s a fun little one on Nessus I think? Ghost scans a Fallen monitor and notes that there’s a record of them trading with somebody “really far out there” on Hyperion, or something like that. Nice Mass Effect reference

Can we start naming the supermoves? I’ll lead with Jesus’ Trinity Takedown, followed by the Buddha Bodyslam. Is writing this kind of stuff still a hell-worthy offense, or does it vary by century?

This does sound lame, but it’s not quite “pay $0.99 to make Mario jump higher” bad. I do see why some would look at this as Bungie monetizing a player’s individuality, but I don’t completely understand paying actual money for cosmetics anyways. I’m not the avatar, I’m the guy sitting in front of a TV display diddling

I don’t want to admit that you’re probably right; it’s too depressing

Not only that, but what a weird choice of a hill to die on anyways. Destiny is a GAME. And Kotaku is essentially a formatted series of blogs. Oh well.

Neither do we in this capacity. Until I’m asked to pay real money to access this specific site, then it’s all just free entertainment and they can write whatever the hell they want. If I can’t handle it I’m sure I’d be welcome to go somewhere else.

Sweet jeezus to everyone. Kotaku, IGN, Polygon, whoever...none of these guys owe us anything. They get paid in advertising fees, just like TV, radio, etc. We contribute nothing besides our own unjustifiable sense of entitlement. As for Jason, I thought it was pretty clear he’s been a huge Destiny fan since forever. I

I knew it was Jesus as soon as I saw the abs.

Great read Cecilia. Thanks! I just bought the umbrella and am trying to learn it. I like launching it as a shield and then swimming behind it as it makes a path, but my lack of skill with using it as a shotgun still makes me an easy kill in close quarters combat.
