So what? It’s quite literally the most overall capable combat airplane ever created to date, and an absolute game-changer. And the research is foundational for the next couple of generations of aircraft.

More Context:  The develepment of the F-35 started in 1995.  The first prototype flew in 2000.  The first planes were delivered in 2006.

Also context - that trillion dollars is the full lifecycle cost of the entire program, from development to ongoing maintenance and upgrades.
