“Varying health” is a good way to put it. Pensions, particularly those that are/were well funded, were a prime target for acquisition at one time. Many of the remaining ones were raided internally by union officials when they weren’t making highly questionable investments with other people’s life savings.

Fast food is where they most reliably feed the staff. I assume that it’s because they know that eternally-hungry teens and college kids are just going to help themselves to the food anyway. But it also keeps the morale up and lets the staff know if something is off with the food right away.

I can think of a few obvious reasons:

The defined benefit model of retirement ceased to be functional during the 70's. The only group that routinely has a pension is public employees, and those benefits are unsustainable.
