I’ve been to events with those kinds of fancy cakes. Usually people say how pretty the cake looks, take a small slice, peel off the fondant, take a single bite of the cake, try to hide their disappointment, then quietly discard the rest in hopes of not offending the host.

The biggest factor is likely deforestation. Madagascar has lost over 50% of its forests since the 1950s. Forests help create rain and trap water. Removing all that vegetation leads to soil erosion and drought.
