Except that the numbers immediately under the barcode say the same thing as the barcode does, so it's no more difficult than manually typing in those numbers just like they do at the supermarket when something won't scan.

It can be done in Win7. It's not baked into the OS like this but it's doable as long as you can follow simple tutorials. I'm pretty sure I've seen guides to do it as far back as XP.
