Well, realistically, the only region-locked consoles Nintendo made were GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and 3DS. Not many, really, and all in roughly a 10 years window of each other. Every single handheld Nintendo made prior to the 3DS was and still is region-free, and being portable devices, it makes the most sense.
