The Department of Truth is one of the few books that genuinely scared me. Tynion is a great writer, and I’m not surprised The Nice House on the Lake was there. I liked Something Is Killing the Children but it was more Stranger Things than anything. Enjoyable, but not hitting the depths that sci-fi can hit.

...what?

A) Interesting to see that Gizmodo is going full Atlanic but, you know, Pacific in its reporting (SOMEbody made a decision), though all for the good I think because you do actually have good reporters and writers, despite my being a real asshole about style

Hey, this is a little bit weird to do in comments sections but Kinja is unforgiving, but I was looking through things (in all honesty, for deleting things employers wouldn’t like) and you’re totally right about WVa and I’m sorry for being needlessly (and erroneously) combative about it.

I really appreciate that this article presents a sense of the full complexity of this issue; you don’t get a lot of things in media that spur further thought rather than reinforcing extant beliefs, and this did for me.

... Jesus fucking Christ, dude. Why go full-tilt onto schizophrenia? Also please cite that.

Gosh, you’re right, that PhD in English was a real waste. I really can’t read for shit.

Cool, dude, I’m absolutely sure every single person who’s good at programming and costs/benefits analysis has decided to move to one of the most singularly unaffordable place in the US and the world.

Man I love it when you guys make your investments known.

From what I recall it oddly has exceptional internet but yeah, maybe never cross a bridge.

I enjoy it quite a bit. Possibly I’m not the target as I’m an uncle and not a dad, but it still delights me.

In all seriousness, I accepted a job once knowing the company was doomed because a) paycheck) and b) taxes. It’s not actually idiotic to go for a sinking ship for a few months.

This is an intriguing idea. I wonder if Asimov’s laws of robotics are in there somewhere. But, on the other hand, building in principles like avoiding “toxicity” and responses that are biased against “non-Western viewpoints” implies a shit-ton of metadata work to actually define those terms, and that further implies a

Okay, while the whole pay-to-play (and potentially to impersonate an official account) thing may well go down as one of the worst business decisions outside of outright fraud, the analogy to charging for bathroom access doesn’t make sense. It’s not like Musk’s version of Twitter is charging to post in general—though I

My guess would be they went big for PR purposes, which honestly makes sense as a tactic (assuming your clients don’t need immediate redress to, like, pay rent and buy food). I mean, we’re talking about it, right?

Just for some context, because I was interested: Tigar (the judge in this case) required the CA department of corrections to provide gender reassignment surgery for a trans inmate and required CDCR staff to get vaccinated against COVID. He also has a strong record on denying governmental efforts to expel immigrants

Short answer is that in a common law polity (which the US sorta-kinda is, the same way we’re a sorta-kinda democracy), precedence makes repealing laws way harder than passing new ones. Hence why, in a particularly illustrative example, prohibition was instituted by a Constitutional amendment and was repealed, not by

Oof, remember when that video of campus cops spraying crowd control pepper spray directly into the faces of students at UC Davis at point blank range came out and our dear friend Megyn said “It’s a condiment, essentially”?

So, just out of curiosity, given the shit takes I’ve been seeing on here and on Buzzfeed, our great white hope out of rape culture is—TikTok? Are you fucking insane?

She is said [by whom?] to be working on writing the show, not acting in it [why is that a problem?], but if the last three years have been any indication, I’d say Phoebe’s gonna kick up her feet [okay, regurgitate an actually good outlet], force Amazon to cough up the coin, and wait until she can sign with another
