I’m accepting it on the basis it’s above a planet. Maybe the terrestrial world is large enough to barely have an atmosphere out that far (Well aware that is NOT how reality works, but video games and Hollywood don’t work with this thing called “reality” too often)

Then that brings on the oldest of mechanical problems: the more moving parts, the easier it is to break.
One problem with that 1st idea is that Earth and Mars are not a constant distance from each other. It varies throughout either planet’s year and means that going one way on the short distance (the first 90 days) the distance is now a lot further, both planets have moved (because these giant rocks don’t move in smooth…
Start calling it a 3 month, one way trip at it’s shortest and it starts to sound a lot longer.
