At the point he said that, they’d been communicating and having private lessons and conversations for several years. So, assuming her statement that he was much more intelligent than others had sad was true, it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility that he’d say valiantly.

Prof. Stubblefield’s central argument is that these clinicians are wrong, and biased against a method of communication they don’t understand. She argues that he has the mental capacity of an intelligent 35-year-old man, just an inability to communicate.

It’s sad because it’s true.
