It's because women (and other victims of sexual assault) are discounted under the law. What many people have to remember is that men craft sexual assault legislation, they enforce it and more often than not are the perps.

It’s amazing how consistently the entire justice system has vastly more compassion and empathy for the perpetrator than the victim when the crime is rape. It’s just so UNFAIR to ruin a nice boy’s life over a little crime like that.

This is one of those things that awesome if everyone involved is really comfortable with it. But I can also see it being terrible, like when birth parents don’t want to be contacted by a child they gave up, and the child just can’t accept that.
