This may be an “owner” thing.
I had an E46 and I was able to sleep in it.
This guy also lives in Fresno, at the base of the Sierras right outside of Yosemite and I can tell you after driving those roads in a old 90's 2500 Silverado 4x4 last week, he should keep the BMW lol.
True, however they likely won’t stop you from being able to drive.
A crate engine Ford 302 and T5 transmission will make it reliable though!
Everything about it looked bad. Just for giggles I looked at what it would cost to have it done. The cheapest estimate was $1,200. I took the $2,000 Subaru gave me on the trade and was happy.
I had my second full shoulder replacement last summer. The thought of that job broke me.
It wasn’t bad until the last two years and then age and corrosion really started to catch up with it. I actually enjoyed troubleshooting and fixing things, but then an intermittent short I couldn’t chase down started draining the battery at inconvenient times. Then I started thinking about what corrosion was doing to…
Why not a version of the same, but with some parameters?
“Not great” doesn’t mean “death trap” either.
And even if your cutoff is 2000, PLENTY of good cheap, Non-Jeeps around then. Hell, hundreds of 2000-2005 Camrys and Corollas, Civics and Accords in this range for cheap.
And let’s not forget, if your kid wrecks into me.... I hope that if I go, they go too, want to save them…
Outdated, maybe.... insufficient, not necessarily.
Just because its old, doesn’t mean its a deathtrap.
Dating myself a bit, but I had a similar experience in high school. The kid with the parking spot next to me my senior year had a new e39 M5. Me? I parked a 1985 Chevy Cavalier with a busted radio and a boombox in the back seat next to that M5.
Stop looking at porn and you’ve have been faster.
The sad reality is, according to the CDC, automobile accidents are still the leading cause of death among 16- to 19-year-olds.
Call in anecdotal, but I’ve seen significantly more flipped sedans than wranglers (or any suv) on the roads over the years.
Up here in the Northeast (at least in the areas where wiping your ass with $100 bills isn’t common) the default first car is whatever Camry or Accord is still running and cheapest on craigslist.
Oh no! This breaks my heart, Tom. My soon-to-be 16 year old will inherit my 3-pedal ‘97 TJ. We’re wrenching on it this weekend together - tie rods, brakes, and interior to start - and she gets her permit in 2 weeks.
