Split open my old Chrysler 3.0 (mitsu 6g72) before putting it in my car. At 205k, it still looked almost new inside. Factory honing on the cylinder walls, no scoring on the bearings or journals. Replaced all the seals and put it back together.
Fixing everything wrong with the car will still be cheaper than buying a new car.

The original Ultradrive 4 speed automatic is one example. If you put in dextron instead of ATF+3, it would lead to bad results. And apparently it was initially written in owners manuals that Dextron could be used.
