Driving a modern turbo diesel is quite fun until you ask 100% from the engine. Having a lot of torque easily available even without pressing too much the accelerator gives you the impression the car is faster than what it actually is.
It's kinda funny, 'cause here in EU, petrolheads dislike diesel, especially when they are considered sporty.

It's GM. They were afraid that selling Opel to Fiat\Magna would directly strengthen their competitors.
Cross the pond cooperation is essential and has already been started (look at the Focus\next Fusion\Cruze\some Buicks). Competing in EU, where fuel economy is so relevant, is beneficial for their global line-up.
I think that a lot of the actual EU issues were caused by our inept politician. That said the Euro it's not just an European problem. Every big country has to deal with that; even US.
