When I was in middle school, a teacher’s family member died flying out of the bed of a pickup. So I guess the answer to “look how we turned out” is, for some, dead. (I don’t know a thing about seat belts and winter jackets, but that one is for sure a bad idea.)

I have a similar reaction in airplanes (trying to hold it up by the armrests, the need to stop anything I am doing so I can pay maximum attention to the turbulence...).
