I read an interesting article a few years back regarding styling and how most cars look the same. It argued that aerodynamics drivers much of it (they've figured out what shape is the most aerodynamic), and also consumer preference to some extent (most people don't like weird looking vehicles).
Only because someone will care for it and maintain it. If 2018 Ford Escapes become collectible, they'll also be around for decades. All things being equal, the Escape is more reliable and better built than almost anything mass produced at that time.
