If it helps the first book is basically a bunch of strangers telling their random life stories that have nothing to do with each other - the second book is all about how yes, actually, they are all connected in some pretty mind-blowing ways. Read the first book as an anthology of stories with a framing device, it helps

I completely respect your opinion of P&P, but I do have to get my nerd on to point out that the story is actually much better than it seems because this is the first time it was written.

The book is more ambiguous about whether it was a fake out or not than the movie is, or at least that's how it seemed to me. In the movie I could see why the author went that route, because philosophy, but after getting so invested in the book I just felt insulted that he'd even raised the question.
