One of my (non-black) friends likes 2 Dope Queens but warned me about that. A lot of things are explored in the context of whiteness in a way that she knew would get on my nerves (and got on her nerves too).

This is some Octavia Butler-type motivation. I totally love her and have been looking forward to this show because I know have talented she is.

This is the kind of book I’d want to read like 10 years after it was written or an author who’s second book I’d be interested in based on much of what you point out.

And my experience is that a lot of white women treat valid reflection and point of view as being derogatory. It’s not about being negative, it’s about identifying a genuine factor in our feminist outlook. Self reflection and criticism is hard, but it’s absolutely necessary to the shared goal.

Thank you for your brave confession. I know the bare minimum about Black Panther despite being firmly entrenched in nerd spaces. Just last night I got called out on this. I stand by my superhero movie side-eye.

I’m fine with people not going as long as they use that time to do something work-related. It’s like when I sit in my office and get actual stuff done rather than going to a work event. It feels like time better spent and someone will either tell about it later or point me to the video if I really need to see

I want a Family Feud style depiction of how a survey of 100 people would have answered this headline, complete with the audience shouting out the answer:

You need to tell that to the Grammys. Thank you for the link, though, because I need to catch up with the rest of the galaxy on this one.

Haha, yeah, I didn’t know who that was at all. Real truth: I’m actually a terrible person to be commenting on this. I don’t listen to the radio and the categories I have a strong opinion on are deep in the roster. Swear to god, the first time I heard that Despacito song was yesterday but I know every last one of the

I’ll say this about the Grammys this year: it was pretty competitive and most of the nominees for the main categories actually made sense and are artists that I feel are genuinely talented. Usually I look at the nominees and think (1) who? (2) why? or (3) naw. But this year at least they got it in the ballpark.

I travel and go out alone all the time, but I still haven’t become completely comfortable going to parties alone or eating alone. A lot of the latter is less about other people’s judgement but that I’ve often gotten such bad service—unless I’m sitting at the bar, which I don’t prefer. I assumed servers think I’ll

That enjoyment level completely depends on the person. Lots of folks, even though happily partnered and friended, still prefer to do those things solo—in fact, I wish we’d reinforce this more so people will stop complaining about having to do stuff with their loved ones that they don’t enjoy.

I just heard that there are a lot of people in Dallas doing this. I thought there’d be too much sprawl, but crunching the numbers, it works out.

I only know a handful of people in DC proper who own cars. Zip Car and Car2Go along with Lyft, public transit, walking, and biking are much cheaper options and often more convenient. And even folks that have them will only use them on the weekends.

Yeah, I know quite a few people in NYC and DC who are parents who don’t own cars. The city has the infrastructure for it and having a car is more of a hindrance. You can Lyft, Car2Go or Zip Car when you need it. Or a lot of them just borrow a relative’s car if they really need it.

Agreed. I’m glad people are holding those folks accountable.

Me too! I go back and read it every few years because I enjoy those ideas and that journey so much.

I love this list. I’m sad about her passing, but I hope it introduces even more people to her wonderful work. Like Butler, she was one of the most versatile authors in genre, equally as good doing fiction or non-fiction, stand-alone stories or series, short or long fiction, fantasy or sci-fi, big ideas or small

This is not surprising news from San Francisco. There are a lot of things I really loved about living there back in the day, but it is probably the most intellectually dishonest of the liberal cities on race.

I don’t think Get Out will win for best picture as much as I’d love that (for the blackness and the horror factor). But I could see it snagging screenplay.
