I’ve seen both situations. Like when people in my old neighborhood were hot about getting a farmers market. And then they realized that the farmers market was pretty awesome and it became a real community focal point.
There’s probably a lot of that at play, but not the whole story, I’m sure. At the same time, I’ve heard long-time residents initially mad about new services that they come to appreciate. And then the common factor is people just not willing to talk to each other to collaborate on making the neighborhood fit everyone’s…
I’m not gonna hate. I think this is a good reminder that people need to be aware of the dynamics of their community and whether they’re being a decent neighbor. And that’s going to sometimes involve understanding and reconciling the impact of one’s presence in a certain community.
I think one of the big issues you hit on is to actually interact with your neighbors. That’s why I like the suggestion to get involved with the ANC. Make an effort to go to community events and, you know, be a part of the community.
Truth.
Agreed. A frustrating factor is that we don’t have a good vocabulary for parsing all of this out. It’s not just about colorism or technical ethnic makeup. It’s about a lot of other things when it comes to how people’s identities are assessed, from skin color to hair type to features to cultural expression. But…
I gave up on people understanding who is or isn’t on the team a long time ago. At the end of the day, people are going to think however they want to about it despite self-identification or appearance.
Gina Torres is my favorite thing about everything she’s associated with. Also, I met her once and it was transcendent.
I think my cut-off is around the 70s. And I don’t like modern instruments involved either. If I see a keyboard, I’m gonna be wary. You get a piano or organ and maybe some drums. That’s it.
The only way to get me into church these days outside of weddings, funerals, and christenings is to boast a good, bumping gospel choir. And I love hearing them in unexpected places—like my neighborhood Safeway would have a choir there on Sunday afternoons, and I would plan my grocery shopping trips around that and…
Thanks for reporting this. It’s an extraordinarily outrageous move. Between this and conservatives’ court-packing power grab, I’m pretty through with this week.
I love having the city to myself for Thanksgiving. Sometimes it can be really challenging to explain to people why I might prefer that in a given year. It’s so ingrained as an obligatory communal celebration. I mostly don’t even spend it alone, I just don’t make a big fuss.
100% agree. One of my best Thanksgivings was spent roaming around Italy by myself.
It seems that you (and similarly situated folks) probably don’t need as much extra help enjoying Thanksgiving. Clearly, you’ve got it down. There’s more room for guidance for those who do have more complicated relationships than you do for the holiday.
The presence of Eliza Dushku’s abysmal first half season will forever mar this show. But I’ve heard such good things that I need to get over it and finish it out.
I tried Bojack but I wasn’t that into it. It’s the premise, not the content, which seems solid. I feel the same about Bob’s Burgers—and that I can only handle one H. Jon Benjamin character at a time.
That’s deep. RIP, everyone. Archer has the capacity to switch up the feels like that.
I’d hope to replicate my parents sense of service and social justice as they both are/were very civically involved in their communities. They grew up crazy poor in the Jim Crow era and built incredible lives while instilling the weight of that with their kids. And I love that as long as we were striving to be do…
It’s often less for Uncle Jack and more for the rest of the losers enabling Uncle Jack. Stealth shade achieved.
