From my perspective, often a diplomatic “use google!” is the best teaching tool. When we on-board people to my team, one of my first suggestions is for people to know their reliable resources to consult before they submit a proposal or respond to a request. The response to mistakes is more “I don’t have the

I mostly agree with this in thinking about my personal effort to make an environment better. But I try to balance this idea with accountability on both sides too, as in “I’m happy to explain why I think you’ve misstepped if you’re willing to hear it and use the info to do better in the future.” Otherwise, that

This was really interesting—I appreciated such a wide representation of issues (I didn’t know about the Pride Center in SA). I had a fascinating conversation on this topic with my therapist and what the trends were for her clients in DC (a lot of elevated anxiety and depression issues). I think the advice about

I was also pleased to see NY shoot down the state constitutional convention proposal although the national one passed it Wisconsin. That’s certainly something to keep an eye on as a potential disaster waiting in the wings. That battle is brewing and it’s an ugly one.

I thought about buying my own phone and just getting the service, but I didn’t think the expense was worth it. Hopefully, enough people will convince the powers that be to let us choose our phones at the next upgrade opportunity (which won’t be a while for me).

Right? My job isn’t switching to Android, so I’m avoiding the update until it won’t let me anymore. I miss my Android, but not enough to give up a free phone.

That hasn’t been my experience in terms of logistical plans. The venue stays the venue, the agenda stays the agenda, you control what you wear and how you get there. The wildcard is knowing the kind of people who will be there. But other types of planning, especially the kind mentioned in the article, are the type

I think the logistical aspect of planning is really helpful: making sure your clothes are comfortable, knowing the layout of the venue or agenda of the event, having a sense of the crowd that will be there. It all helps to set expectations and eliminate distractions that ramp up the anxiety.

I’d definitely take duck over turkey. Hands down.

All carbs welcome!

How strongly attached to turkey are you? I will only make turkey upon request, especially after spending several holidays with vegetarians. It’s not my preferred protein, not that I’d push a leftover turkey sandwich off the plate.

Obligatory.

Agreed. I remember talking to my colleague way back when Sanders was gaining momentum and how she was really excited to have such a populist voice in the conversation. For all the positive Sanders did for making Democrats show their work on progressive policies, he was never going to be the voice of truly

Definitely not into people policing others’ blackness, although it’s fair to question whether the tone was right for this audience. These pieces aren’t just about telling one’s story, they’re about evaluating society as we evaluate ourselves, making assertions about how this world works and how the ways we perceive it

That really would be an interesting perspective. I’m fascinated by the experience of my brother’s kids who are multiracial and unequivocally identify as black (even the ones who look straight up white) because of how they were raised. I grew up as a high-yellow dip in the gene pool of a darker complexioned black

I appreciated the story aspect of it. I don’t want to overlook that it’s not easy for someone to expose themselves like this for public consumption. But it did make me a little mad and sad, mostly because I wanted it to be more thoughtful about what it implied of colorism and internalized exoticism and blackness.

Agreed. I had high hopes at the beginning and then the actual narrative really let us down. There were points that were ideal for delving into the overall theme yet were just breezed by while other spots lingered aimlessly (and superficially) for too long. Mentioning his grandfather marching in Washington is such a

I’m generally curious about and interested in people sharing stories about their identity precisely because of how people choose to identify. The problem here is that the analysis didn’t come off as that thoughtful, and that seems to be what people are responding to.

State-by-state law doesn’t exactly make it easy to understand. It really depends on the elements so in many places, they will absolutely read as similar. I mostly know the difference because I was paid to know the difference.
