That happens anywhere, throughout the world. Labor is a mobile asset. People have been moving to cities and, more dramatically, across nations and oceans, for thousands of years to secure employment. Corporations often do set up shop in rural areas for cost savings. Wal-Mart is a great example.

The internet has helped a lot, as has aggressive college recruitment. I got out because colleges got my PSAT scores through automated reporting and then started offering me programs and scholarships. That was *right* before the internet was a thing. So the flyers came in the mail. But it was enough.

Only the small work force currently doing it that would struggle to make a transition. But most of the people in the Appalachian region have access to better jobs, especially in the hospital and prison systems.
