Coins in-race give you a tiny speed boost every time you pick one up or use the item, they also raise your top-speed until you hit 10 coins. Outside of the race, coins are how you unlock your new characters and kart parts.

He totally dropped the ball with this one, he's not supposed to look at the camera...he's supposed to look at his hapless victims. In that sense, in order to get both, he should have teamed up with someone moving the camera, or come in on his victims from behind.
I'm disppointed. The hand gesture is unwarranted, too.
