well, the former requirement of a majority of 60+ in the senate did mean that there had to be either compromise or a massively popular single party to appoint a justice. But yeah since that’s gone, it’s all fucked. 

There are three equal branches of govt: the president, Congress, and the courts. Republicans have the presidency and Congress and this appointment will give them control of the highest court in the land. Why this is SO VERY TERRIFYING is that court appointments are for life. So there is no election, no referendum, no…

...And it will give them a bump going into the mid-terms.

You’re not wrong. But so many people won’t be able to leave. It seems like the ultimate expression of privilege if I leave the country and those suffering have to stay behind and take it.

I’ve considered it, but that leaves a lot of poor people behind-- not to mention the next few generations who will suffer as a result. 

We can’t, the Republicans changed the rules so they only need a simple majority to pass a supreme court justice.

I’ve daydreamed about quitting my job and going into some sort of advocacy work, but I think it might be time for it to become a reality. This country is about to get so much worse and we all have to do more to slow it down and maybe, possibly, by some slim chance, stop it.

It’s the same reason that every pregnant celebrity is apparently “flaunting their belly” when they walk around outside or exist in public in any way. 

I know that this was not a metric in this study, but the discrepancy between GDP and treatment of women in the US deserves a lot of scrutiny. The US should be called out and embarrassed for its inability to treat women as equal citizens, despite claiming to be the greatest country in the world.
