I’ve been thinking a lot about this, also! Celeste was so adamant at *every* therapy appointment that Perry would NEVER hurt the kids, I don’t think it ever crossed her mind that an abusive household does more than just physical damage. I also think that’s what truly, finally motivated her enough to leave him.

I wish the show had explained this as well as the book apparently did. Women with wealthy abusive spouses do not always have access to as much money as it seems. I know women who have had to sock away the money they are given for groceries a few dollars at a time because their husbands control everything.

LOL @ “cereal giving”. He was a complete and total mess. And that captures how absurd his rants really were.

Despite the characters all being rich and white (minus Bonnie), they did a great job of humanizing them and giving them a voice. It was very well done and not the typical rich, white woman trope we’re used to.

I think that is kinda what’s been lost on some who think this show was just about rich women with rich people issues. Abuse is abuse and abusers follow a classic pattern most times. Her leaving might have been easier financially, but that money sure as hell didn’t make it any less dangerous.

I had a way different take than you did. I didn’t read the book so maybe that would change it, but I felt like it was much more of a despite the wealth, despite the houses/cars/jewelry/schools/etc happiness isn’t guaranteed, domestic violence doesn’t discriminate by racial or socioeconomic lines, and than women spend

Same. When she was there cleaning, I kept thinking he was going to pop up and kill her.

There are lots of serious commentary and discussions about this show but someone remind me the next time I drink too much to instead use Nathan’s term, “mis-drank.”

“isn’t this the point of the show, tho? that these spoiled rich women are so insanely out of touch?”

I thought, FOR SURE, Perry was going to go Celeste’s new apartment and kill her. I’m shocked she didn’t die, also.

Iunno. I think getting the shit beat out of you on a regularly basis is a pretty big “problem.”

I thought it was more about “all kinds of people are secretly unhappy/domestic violence happens in all kinds of households, even rich white ones” and also “women gotta be there for each other, stop holding each other to impossible standards and stop tearing each other down”

Rich white lady privilege means you can go rent another apartment. But it doesn’t mean you will safely escape.

I recently read the book before I started the series and I REALLY, REALLY wish they had explored the classism of Celeste’s storyline like they did in the book.

i loved every single episode. i even watched some of them more than once because it was so beautifully shot and to make sure i caught all of the nuances. every single women on that cast did a brilliant job.

‘Chloe’s Playlist’ on spotify has everything!

That was the best fucking hour of TV I’ve seen in a long time.

The music selected for the show is A++.
