Much agreed. I've recently rewatched some of the original episodes and they were fantastic in that regard, even with less-than-stellar SFX. See Bad Blood and Dod Kalm.

The Door Into Summer is such a good book and i totally agree, i think it could really work as a movie. Bring someone like Nolan to direct and we're game.

Verhoven is really a master of hitting that sweet spot between seriousness and parody.

The second version is likely "Ghost in the Shell 2.0", which is the original movie with added 3D graphics… that haven't really aged well. Stick to the original.

Great chance to rewatch this gem on the big screen.
