I think you can make a good faith argument differentiating reinterpretation/deconstruction as being distinct from adaptation.

Many adults weren’t born in 1987, it’s absolutely normal that this wasn’t “the first thing that comes to mind”. But it is inexcusable for a writer to not do a basic internet search on the subject of an article.

I think a lot of us read it that way. Probably because somehow, that makes more sense than what actually happened.
