Agreed. First North American of any gender to medal in cross-country! Such a drag that she had to wait a couple of years to get her gold medal. Although I have to regretfully say, she is not much of a commentator.

Sir, with the utmost respect, it's not Olympic parlour games or table manners.

If they referred to men's sports as "gentlemen's", it would be fine. It's the notion that the women require some sort of gentility when you refer to them, while the men can just be, well, men. I don't like the double standard.

I'm sure it will work fine for whitey here. The only reason he thinks shutting his eyes and la-la-la-I-can't-hear-you is an acceptable reaction to racism is because he has never been the victim of racism himself.

I can only assume that it is up to each individual sporting federation and some are more progressive than others.

Yeah, at the CBC Olympics site, they are all referred to as "women's", but at the official Sochi site, where I'm sure they are bound to use the official designations, it's all over the map.

I can see it for sports where the ladeez have been participating since the time when they were still referred to as such. But a brand new entry?

Way to feed my inherent narcissism.

Why do you suppose they refer to it officially as "Ladies" ski jump, as opposed to women's? I find it odd and condescending.

Postscript to this story: the Norwegian coach came to the aid of Sara Renner during the Team Sprint race. Sara's partner in that race, Beckie Scott, is married to the guy who handed off the ski today. A chance to pay it forward.

I know. I love it!

Canadian fans still remember when a Norwegian coach came to Sara Renner's aid during the sprint, when she broke a pole. He handed her a new one, and Renner got the silver. The Norwegian in the race came fourth. Incredible show of sportsmanship.

It's easy to reject racism when you're white.

fnar, fnar

But that's why your initial comment doesn't make sense. I mean, I guess it makes sense for you, but as a commentary on the issue of this woman tweeting a photo that would objectively be received as racist, it makes no sense.

You can reject it but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist objectively.

I think Kristen Stewart's been hacked!

This is a lie of Rob Fordian proportion.

I think he would be very heartened to hear himself described as an artist. For years he was known as a technician, with not enough artistry. It is only in the last few years that he's started to develop that aspect of his skating and it was great to see him rewarded for that last season. Amazing how well he performed
