I've also had situations where I fought one group of them, only to get hit by another group within seconds. That doesn't usually happen, but it still seems like an annoying oversight.

Yeah, they seem to. I mainly just run from them because they're annoying to fight and they never drop anything good.

I think the "retroactive hate" has happened for a few reasons. On one hand, I think gamers were kind of overrating it when it came out (how many GOTY awards did it win?), but it was also one of the last big RPG's to come out before The Witcher 3, so expectations were different.
