Did you ever play tackle football? I participated in each of the sports you mentioned and football has a level of violence that the others don’t even begin to approach. Sure, there is the occasional elbow in basketball or getting beaned in the head in baseball, but a single game of football would cause more trauma…

The problem is two fold. Fans want more than wins and teams aren’t very good at finding football talent.

The team is cursed by a complete lack of midfield ability and organization. Croatia’s midfield is far superior to Argentina’s.

Sadly, that “patriotic right” has been a part of the US since the time of Hitler. People of a very similar mind have been a part of our country for a long time. The loudness of their voice fluctuates from time to time.

I’ve seen a douche-dad wearing a Chive shirt get into his car with a giant Chive bumper sticker at my kid’s school. Clearly the cool dad.

Although there is definitely a core of owners, maybe even a majority of them, who hold far-right Fox & Friends views, I don’t think it is the true motivation. They are also likely concerned about the potential financial ramifications of offending some of their customers, but that isn’t it either.

The reality is that the iso basketball played by the Rockets is not their choice. It is a function of their roster makeup.

I’m not suggesting everyone should play a rookie QB, but the value of having rookie contract QB, DT, DE, T and CB cannot be underestimated.

The rookie wage scale has made a top 10 pick on a RB less disastrous but it is still god awful value. In fact it incentives taking the high dollar positions even more. A number 1 pick QB gets capped at the same amount as a number 1 pick RB or even kicker. On the open market the QB is worth 3-10x as much.

I’m not sure I’d call Budenholzer fortunate. He is a good coach who was dealt a tanking roster this past year. Red Auerbach with Phil Jackson and Pat Riley as assistants would have done no better.

Now that Condi is done, maybe we can get Cheney and Rumsfeld to come in with some shock and awe.
