I’m so happy to see some other people are old enough to remember watching Sifl & Olly while high in their friend’s basement in the 90's.

James DeMonaco doesn’t seem to realize that the only reason there have been 5 Purge movies isn’t because they make a half a billion dollars, it’s because each one probably costs less than the studio head’s car collection to produce.

It seems a bit judgemental to call Bigfoot worshippers a “cult.” Maybe they are just very dedicated viewers of Animal Planet

Cheryl would probably have a stronger case to be Miss Teen Riverdale if she A) wasn’t in her 20s and B) hadn’t gone out of her way to antagonize everyone in town for the last 7 years. But you know what, screw it, she’s got my vote

But Superman is fundamentally about the immigrant experience in America, and seeing the world that he lost is a huge part of the character.

So this would effectively freeze all production (Which may be a good thing) as productions like Deadpool 3 can’t utilize improv due to the WGA strike which I think would hurt the movie in the end.

He’s good but out of the trilogy give the last one (Children of Memory) a pass. It’s a lesser work by far.

Legends and Lattes is a fun, meme-generating (and possibly meme-generated) book but no more, and I think the Hugo has had a tendency for a while to get a bit over-excited about fun or ironic books which are meme-worthy. The last one which did that was Space Opera, a perfectly adequate bit of disposable frippery which

I’ve only read the Children of Time trilogy, but its literally some of the best books I’ve ever read. its like a modern version of classic Clark/Asimov/Card style science fiction, a real meditation on the nature of sentience/sapience and what constitutes higher order life and how we even think about the concept. Some

Sure, I can get with that. I don’t mind establishing Superman’s Kryptonian background and the sacrifice his parents made, but once he’s on Earth I basically never want to talk about Krypton again.

I’ve Heard Good Things but haven’t checked it out.

I have been wondering that myself.  Haven’t read any yet.

I’m about 2/3 of the way through the first book and I’m really enjoying it. It reminds me of Vernor Vinge’s books (which works out well, since I really liked Vernor’s books.)

Pauline Kael murders movies . . . with words!

Yes. There are some that are better than others but the The Final Architecture trilogy is great. I haven’t read most of his fantasy novels though so I can’t speak to those.

Few things make me cross than the fact that most of the coverage for an award that is largely literary goes to the categories that aren’t literary at all.  When there was the “Best Game” special category a couple years ago, most of the coverage went to the winner of that, rather than, you know, all the rest.

The Nebulas are more the SAG, while the Hugos:Oscars comparison is apt?  In that the “WorldCon Membership” is a nebulous group mostly of long-time insiders?

Always seemed weird that people seem to take the Hugo more seriously than the Nebula. It’s like preferring the People’s Choice to the Oscar.

What a deeply weird (and somewhat weak) year for novels and their awards. I’ve read all the Hugo and Nebula nominated novels except Kaiju Preservation Society. I previously ranked the Nebula nominees, so I have updated that list with the Hugo nominees. I correctly predicted the Nebula winner but I haven’t got a clue

It’s that time of year again
