I dunno, whenever I see an animated movie that kind of shocks me with how adult funny it is, I've come to expect that if I look up the director (or a bunch of its writers) I'll see that they probably got their start in the Simpsons (or were writers during its Golden Age). Another example: Wreck-It Ralph.

Are we really giving Friends credit for the "hang-out" sitcom formula considering it followed Cheers which was literally the premise of the entire show: unlikely friends hang-out in a bar in between living their lives?
