It’s a particular genre of a game - referred to as “masocore”.
I don’t think black underpants guy is the kid, dude.
This is some hardcore “paranoid dad” or “virgin zoomer who lives on Twitter” bullshit you’re pushing mate.
“What games get torn to shreds? Did other mediocre-yet-hyped games of the time get similar treatment, or was it primarily FFXIII/JRPGs?”
I mean, that doesn’t really account for about 50% of these.
Yeah, this list wasn’t bad but it’s a ridiculous thing to miss off.
Oh brother lol
Yeah there is that as well.
“even businesses adhere to even a form of the Anglo-Saxon core values and profit from it”
This is true but VH1 tended to focus a lot more music that was friendlier to an older generation, and I was a teen in the 1990s, so VH1 was just a little bit too... well not quite “dad vibes”, but like 30-something vibes.
I don’t think anyone is claiming it was “satire” per se.
I mean, when do you think the West made better looking/feeling games than Japan? Because personally I’d say the West didn’t pull clearly ahead until Bioware got into 3D games. KotOR and particularly Mass Effect 1 showed how you could have a story as exciting and impressive as any JRPG, but also have interaction with…
I’m sorry to hear that lol.
I mean, that’s still pretty weird, because it presumes he never even considered the issue before or after that. This mode hasn’t been the typical way JRPGs have been discussed, and honestly generalizing from it just makes one another internet person with a misguided axe to grind.
I’ll take your word for it re: “racist commentary” of XIII, it’s in the era when being a xenophobic twat was often a stand-in for having any kind of actual comedy (in part due to people thinking South Park was the apex of humour), so it’s not unbelievable.
Oh yeah, I’m aware! My wife is lactose intolerant, but loves dairy, so has gradually built up something of a resistance. She can’t drink much cow’s milk or eat the kind of cheese with much lactose in it without... consequences... unless she takes a pill, but she can now eat lower-lactose stuff (including British…
I mean, the issue with that is that there was kind of a point (where there wasn’t so much in say 2008 and earlier) - a lot of Japanese game design was particularly stale around then, just like a lot of US game design was super-stale around 2006. But stuff like Demon’s Souls, Dogma and so on really started to change…
I agree but it reached an entirely different level of social acceptability in “comedy” and the like post-9/11 particularly through the ‘00s. Trump and others have been trying (with some success) to bring it back into fashion.
I think that’s a bit faulty because the reality was in the “South Park” era that most people were way to too dumb to actually do that, so instead they did just say some racist shit and then act like it was a joke/funny, which isn’t how it works.
