You misunderstood his query. Marxism's philosophy wasn't derived from atheism, and Marx didn't cite atheism as the authority for his claims. Atheism was declared, but it was a symptom, not a cause.

You beat me to it. People get confused with totalitarian regimes who used nominal atheism as a tool to suppress what they saw as opponents, with atheist activists who won't just shut up and give respect to crazy beliefs.

The closest example I can think of is China. The government and nation are officially atheist, and any religious expression is strictly controlled and regulated.
