Wouldn't it take MORE work to create a false-perspective version than it would be to just photograph it at that angle? I don't think it's false-perspective. The difference is just more evident in the screen than the base, for obvious geometric reasons.

It does seem a bit out of place. Lifehacker might be a better place for it.

In your pilot example, the Er and the Um are serving a very useful purpose: to warn you that the pilot is probably not in a fit-state of mind to be piloting a plane, and that you should change flights immediately.

Personally, I like the fact that my address book looks like an actual address book. That can serve as a helpful visual cue as well, especially for someone who's just getting used the the idea of a computer-like device storing and managing their personal data. I'm not sure about the whole stitched yellow leather

So you're in favor of changing something just for the sake of changing it?

How would you redesign a computer's trash can / recycle bin so that it doesn't resemble a real-world-object but can be looked at and immediately understood by someone who's never used a modern operating system?

The iPhone 4S and iPad 3 actually have a small circular disc inside them with a small light being shined on it according to the tilt of the accelerometer. A microlens then captures the image of the disc and sends it to an image processor to create the effect.

Where on earth did you get the "no one cares about or will ever see" bit? You may want to check the hit count for this article one more time...

I can do that on this quarter that I'm holding in my hand as well.

I can't imagine that the power required to perform that calculation would have any noticeable impact whatsoever on overall performance.
