I feel like thats the one selling point of the GM Multiflex tailgate for casual pickup users. You can have a shorter bed but still handle 8' lumber and plywood.

You also have to recognize most police agencies already have body worn cameras and squad cameras which presumably keep everyone accountable in traffic stops.
