I thought they did an amazing job. Some parts were cut out, but considering that the whole book was the boy’s train of thought, it would be hard to translate a lot to screen. It was the mother’s story, so it makes sense that it was all about her. It was just her story as seen through his eyes.

Oh, it is nothing as treacly as that. The viewer always knows exactly what’s going on, and nothing is glossed over. For example (spoilers), some days the boy’s mother is too depressed to get out of bed. To him, he doesn’t know it’s not normal, so he just goes about his business. He’s locked away into a wardrobe…

Did you read the book? The movie is done the same way, where everything is seen through the young boy’s eyes. She protected him from anything traumatic, so it’s just referenced as to shown. I’ve read this theory in other places as well, but don’t know if I buy it. Male animals from many species kill existing babies when they come to power. It seems to be something instinctively known.
