I totally agree that without the private research and funding, it would not have happened (as quickly). I was just commenting on the fact that taxpayer money goes to fund some of the research that goes into these things. It seems a bit unfair from that perspective. People are all about businesses and profits, but when

I went back and read the article.

And I'm sure a lot of the groundwork also used government funding. That's always on of the things I have issues with; people always underestimate the impact of research done outside of the companies themselves.

Her post was a bit over-the-top but as someone in the same field, I shudder to think that you can patent genes.

It is fucked up that people went digging up dirt on him.

I'd say that perhaps he did what he did partially because of his history.

I am sorry, but more so than my dad, I am the bottle-opener of the house.

Ahh ok. I wasn't sure if it was her having prioritization issues or relationship issues. It sounds like this being "too nice" is a problem. If he's not pushy about it and she comes over and does badly on her final, he's going to feel bad and yay, tension and bad feels.

Your friend's situation sounds kind of weird... I mean, you should support your partner through life problems and whatnot, but she's not his maid, nanny, or mother. Priorities are priorities; she is in charge of her studying, and he is in charge of his essay. Unless she is using it as an opportunity to procrastinate,

I found something akin to that with.... my ex-boyfriend, of all things.

I think I mixed up HK and mainland. British English is definitely what's taught in mainland.

People in Hong Kong grow up speaking English as a second language. However, they learn British English, compounded by an Asian accent, so it ends up sounding quite different from American English.

Yeah, it's kind of looked down upon to women to drink a lot.

It was phrased extremely provocatively and came off in a bad way.

Says the person who goes out of their way to incorrectly correct someone on their article on the internets?

Callous in this sense is intended to mean "not thoughtful" in your actions. In that you don't have any bad intentions, but you obviously did not think things through before posting your critique. It's kind of like mansplaining, in that you insist on correcting someone else on a subject that you know little about.

I wouldn't say that he will never not want to bone you.

OMG that is hilarious XD

I'm in love with that black-and-white dress @_@

"Too much" is relative. You kinda have to have a high tolerance if you work for corporate/do business in Asia. Though there's an admittedly fine line between "high tolerance" and "abuse".
