The title presumably refers to Gandalf and Aragorn hunting down Gollum in order to figure out where the Ring came from, which is a minor subplot in the book that the films more or less omitted.

I was recently reading a book about Siskel & Ebert, and it reminded me of the odd array of movies I was convinced to see (and I convinced at least one friend to join me to see) in the movie theater in my teenage years because of their good reviews. This Is Spinal Tap was one of them. My friend’s mom came with us and I…
Darth Vader is great, but Anakin? Come on now.
I totally agree. I like Claire. I read the whole thing as Carmy being self destructive like the rest of his family.
And he thought he’d found some beatific escape from his terrible burden of making expensive short ribs.
I think the show was doing something with Claire that didn’t hit for a lot of people. Because I do think she’s a slightly unreal dream girl, but only from Carmy’s perspective. Objectively, she’s a full person with an inner life, who parallels Carmy as another deeply ambitious person who way exceeded the low…
I don’t know that Carmy is totally to blame but I definitely agree that it wasn’t Claire’s fault. Everyone on that show except for her expects Carmy to spend 100% of the time on the restaurant. Towards the end of the season Sydney gets mad at him for daring to attempt to have a personal life, basically pre-blaming him…
I don’t think Claire was a MPDM, but I do think she fell into the trap of “thankless love interest” or what I sometimes think of as “thankless Michelle Monaghan role” since she so often got stuck with it. Often seen as the dead wife/girlfriend in flashback, they are highly idealized with every interesting personality…
I agree with all of these except for Claire. She seems cool. Like, normal person cool. Someone who doesn’t need any of Carmy’s bullshit weighing her down. So, Carmy’s the worse love interest in this case.
Roy was a much better character when he was just an oblivious meathead. There was no reason to turn him into a jerk; the lack of chemistry between Pam and him was palpable.
Fuckin’ sad.
This is just theAV Club equivalent of intentionally misspelling a word to increase engagement; just being wrong to get people to comment.
Sometimes when I watch the Office I feel kind of bad for David Denman who played Roy. Roy starts out as basically the same character as Andy from Parks and Rec. But while Roy just sort of became a really shitty violent ex-fiance, Andy became the lovable doofus ex boyfriend and Chris Pratt turned that into an A list…
I worked with her team on a project a few years back and I can anecdotally confirm that your first point is true. I did not work with her personally but with her manager and mother, and there were definite vibes of “fuck it she can’t do anything right.” They were insanely protective of her in a way I felt wasn’t…
Yeah, like...she’s a billionaire. She has legions of parasocial relationship-nurturing fans willing to get their (online, natch) knives out at a moment’s provocation. She’s amassed a shit-ton of plaudits, and is on her way toward becoming one of the (if not “the”) biggest musical artists in the history of recorded…
Yeah, I don’t even know why she tries to say things that won’t set people off, they’re gonna find shit to complain about.
anjelique kidjo put out a great ‘remain in light’ tribute album a few years ago, so this album had better be good.
Just one at a time for the Academy, apparently (a woman - Justine Triet - did not get nominated for Best Director). Gerwig getting a director nod was a gimme I thought. That’s the only real “surprise” in these nominations, to me.
The Gerwig snub is the worst of the lot. She did something that showed remarkable creativity and craft based upon a doll that already had a bunch of silly little-kid cartoons associated with it. The only anyone didn’t think it would be a disastrous idea from the very beginning was that her name was attached to it.
Almost like the academy doesn’t like women directors
