Only certain lightweight rims.  Plus they were annoyingly finicky to setup, and heavy.  Best application for those was trails bikes.

Correction, Avid Arch Supremes were the best rim brakes ever made.

You need the shim kit for the parallel XT/R brakes to really get them to work properly.  Good luck finding one, though.

In terms of component complexity, it’s a wash. In a mechanical disc setup, the lever is simpler but the caliper is more complex.

The current Tacoma looks like it’s trying too hard.

Ehhh.. I haven’t owned either, but my daily for the last 7 years has been a 2010 Xterra, so basically a Frontier with a permanent topper. Has never let me down.

Underneath all that pretty sheet metal, the Tacoma is just as outdated as the Frontier.
