Well, I'll defend Neelix. He started as a character I just hated and ended up as one of my favourite characters. All credit to Ethan Phillips for that with a minor assist from the later-season writers.

'Necessary Evil' was pretty good. DS9 may be poor at the high-concept one-offs, but it wasn't as bad at them as those TNG episodes you named, none of which were highlights for me. However, your point is taken.

She was at her least objectionable in 'Before & After' which was a neat episode I do admit. I didn't really like 'Warlord': she took a vacation from her normal personality in it though and that was a relief.

In his further defence, it really was a no-brainer decision. He had two choices: (1) put force fields around the proto-universe, thereby destroying it and saving the station; (2) try to move the proto-universe, which (Dax warned) could easily destroy it — however Dax didn't say there would be any danger to the station

Overcooking has killed the premise. Also, Stargate Universe proved that you can completely fulfill that premise and still make a very boring show that it's really not fun to watch, so contrary to current popular Trekker belief, following through on a show's initial premises is not really the main event when it comes

I have seen enough of the later seasons to remain skeptical that the serialisation ever rises above, say, X-Files level. However there are a lot of gaps in my viewing that I am in the process of correcting in this rewatch so my mind could still change about it. I should be finished within a month.

Hi @avclub-64ad8f3af92ef8d9a1c7dfd7265e577d:disqus I recognise you as a fellow somewhat-apologist for Voyager. (Over the past month or two I've read all of the Star Trek AVclub comments sections going back to Encounter at Farpoint during my rewatch jag — I have greatly appreciated the few who like to point out that

A charitable interpretation but I have difficulty buying it. Didn't Odo throw off a ridiculous line about not stepping on ants at some point? It seems to me that they really wanted me to believe that some of these characters don't believe in killing even the lowest life forms needlessly, which is not really something

I agree — Chief O'Brien's ability to beam universes around willy-nilly is pretty slick!

Fair enough. Maybe it is because I am watching this in 2012 when everything is serialised, but as far as serialisation goes in general, I believe DS9 falls squarely into the category of 'mostly not'.
