The Horowitz lab is really good at pushing for more studies on dogs. I'm a fan. Also Miklosi et al cited in this io9 article do a lot of really good work. I work with production animals, but I have done (unpublished) dog work in the past. It's difficult to get funding in this area and actually it's the dog food…

Neuroscience is a very important part of studying animal consciousness, and yes, this study does incorporate behaviour (the reporting of it didn't - falling into the trap that behaviour is less important because unlike lovely numbers, behaviour needs interpretation).
