Sex determination is not always “X” and “Y” chromosomes, like we talk about for humans and other mammals. Birds (and reptiles, and some fish and amphibians) use a different system with a “Z” and “W” chromosome, and the females are the ones that are heterogametic. Females are “ZW” and males are “ZZ” in birds.
